16-170 Concepts of Robotics
5 units, Carnegie Mellon University
The course will introduce students to the main foundational concepts and techniques used in robotics including perception, cognition, and action. Concepts will be grounded in a range of realworld robotic systems to highlight the use of common robotics components such as sensor selection, sensor processing and fusion, path planning algorithms, mechanism design, reasoning about interactions with the environment, and systems integration. Applications of robotics will be discussed along with methods for mapping application requirements to design choices for robotic systems. Students will also be introduced to ethical issues surrounding robotics, including considerations around potential future of uses of robotics technologies. The course will contain programming and written assignments designed to give students a feel for the practical aspects of robot sensing, planning, and actuation.
