ALGORITHMIC TEXTILES DESIGN Section K Textile artifacts are quite literally all around us from clothing to carpets to car seats. These items are often produced by sophisticated, computercontrolled fabrication machinery. In this course we will discuss everywhere code touches textiles fabrication, including design tools, simulators, and machine control languages. Students will work on a series of multiweek, openended projects, where they use code to create patterns for modern sewingembroidery, weaving, and knitting machines and then send these patterns to be fabricated in the textiles lab. Students in the 800level version of the course will be required to create a final project which develops a new algorithm, device, or technique in the realm of textiles fabrication. This pandemicaware iteration of the course will place a greater focus on improvised and virtual textiles fabrication, including visual simulation. Students will not work in person with our larger textiles machines instead they will send pattern files for the instructor to run. PREREQUISITES Basic familiarity with a programming language that can write text to files. No formal prerequisite. EVALUATION Students will be graded out of 36 54 for 15869K points, divided as follows 6 points InClass Exercises 30 points Topical Projects 16 points Final Project 15869K only Please refer to httpswww.cs.cmu.educsdgradcourseschedules21.html for the most recent schedule updates.
