12-782 Spec Topics: Elements of Plasticity Theory & Dislocation Mechanics for Materials
12 units, Carnegie Mellon University
This course is meant to be an introduction to some elements of the mathematical theory of dislocations and the theory of plasticity, meant for graduate students interested in pursuing research in these areas. Topics covered in dislocation mechanics will be physical basis small deformation compatibility, Weingartens theorem static dislocation stress fields Eshelbys analysis of the transformation strain and inhomogeneity problems, of the force on a defect Peierls stress problem and Field dislocation mechanics small and finite deformation theory with links to macroscopic plasticity via averaging. In plasticity, topics covered will be physical basis, criteria for yielding, the formulation of the rate problem at small and finite deformations and analysis of uniqueness of solutions and algorithms for material update and tangent moduli for the small deformation incremental and rate problems.
