06-879 Special Topics: Nanoparticle Engineering
12 units, Carnegie Mellon University
A significant fraction of atmospheric aerosol particles begin life as gas molecules that react to form stable clusters. These freshly nucleated particles are roughly 13 nm in diameter and exist between the realms of heterogenous chemistry and physics. This course will investigate the chemical and physical processes of nanoparticles ranging between 13 nm in diameter. Particular focus will be paid on atmospheric aerosol particles but will also include discussion on more generalized twophase systems. These principles will then be combined with fluid dynamics and mass transfer knowledge to examine the operating principles of nanoparticle instrumentation and their strengths and weaknesses. Finally, nanoparticle fundamentals will be applied to larger particles 10 nm to explore the efficacy of bulkscale models. Suggested, but not hard prerequisite, is 12781 Fundamentals of Atmospheric Aerosols.
