06-635 Production and Supply Chain Optimization
12 units, Carnegie Mellon University
In this course, we study how to quantitatively perform decision-making during production and supply chain operations in the process industry. We cover application topics such as production planning and scheduling, inventory management, supply chain network design, and distribution logistics, enhancing student ability to mathematically model such problems. We also discuss state-of-the-art numerical optimization techniques (both model-based and metaheuristics-based) that are traditionally employed in such settings, while we demonstrate the development of customized optimization algorithms that are necessary to address certain challenging cases. Finally, we introduce techniques for rigorous numerical optimization of stochastic systems to address the various sources and effects of uncertainty in these contexts. Familiarity with basic concepts of mathematical modeling and numerical optimization techniques is expected. Such familiarity can, for example, be obtained through Design, Systems Engineering, or Operations Research courses that are commonly part of an undergraduate engineering curriculum.
