Climate change is an existential issue for the 21st century. Our objective is that all CMU Chemical Engineering majors should be climate literate. By climate literacy we mean that chemical engineers should understand the fundamentals of climate and climate change and the contributions of human activity to climate change. Furthermore, chemical engineers need to understand how climate change and chemical engineering will interact how chemical engineers can contribute to climate mitigation, and how climate change adaptation will influence their potential careers in many industries. Chemical engineers are in an excellent position to both understand this grand challenge and contribute to solutions. The course and modules will address secondary objectives of teaching structured programming via matlab, understanding of data and data processing, and the effective graphical presentation of data. Modules will ultimately follow a flipped structure with online video content and in class group exercises. This course will involve participation at all stages of module development, from vetting existing modules to refining content for modules in the design stages to helping with module design for the remainder of the topics. We expect that one outcome of the module design will be an article in Chemical Engineering Education, and so successful completion B grade or better of the course will include authorship in this article.
